The United Nations Security Council is expected to renew the sanctions on Al-Shabaab before February 28, 2025, as the Al-Shabaab group remains a major threat to Somalia’s stability and regional security.

The measures, which were initially imposed to disrupt Al-Shabaab’s funding and operational capabilities, will continue to target the group’s illegal business networks, foreign financial sources, and arms procurement routes.

Security analysts say the renewal reflects growing concern over the growing threat posed by al-Shabaab, as the group has expanded its financial operations beyond Somalia’s borders.

The Al Shabaab group is reported to have strengthened its involvement in regional smuggling networks, including illegal gold trade and tax collection in the areas it controls.

Western diplomats insist that the sanctions regime is important to maintain pressure on Al-Shabaab, to prevent the group from regaining territorial influence as Somalia’s security environment changes.

If the new sanctions are passed, it will strengthen the position of the international community against Al-Shabaab, but the question is whether additional financial and governmental support will be added to the wider efforts to stabilize Somalia.
