The Daesh terrorist group operating in Puntland has increased its attacks using advanced drones.

Some of these aircraft are equipped with thermal-sensing cameras, enabling them to target military sites at night.

According to the company Vates Somalia, which specializes in risk assessment, one of the types of aircraft seen in the latest scenes in the Calmisaad mountains in the Bari region, is worth more than $9,000.

These modern drones can carry and drop up to four explosive devices, while the cheaper IEDs are designed to drop directly on vehicles, such as trucks and water tankers, or even groups of troops concentrated in an area.

Abdiqani Muse Warsame, who is part of the Puntland army and is recovering from an injury he suffered in a drone attack, said, “We can only target them with the guns we carry.” He highlighted the challenges they face to defend themselves against drones.

The security forces of Puntland and their supply convoys have been targeted several times by drone attacks, which is a sign of the great threat that Puntland forces face from the Daesh group.

Although the use of this type of aircraft is popular among armed groups fighting in Syria and Iraq, the use of ISIS in Puntland shows new tactics used by the group.

The authorities of Puntland have not yet taken clear measures to prevent this growing threat, which has raised concerns about the security of the army and the important routes of supply.
