Somaliland has expressed its concern about the weapons that came into the hands of the tribal militias in the Aabudwaq district of Somalia, and said that the lifting of the arms embargo against Somalia is not the right decision.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, it was said that in the past three months, the Al Shabaab group has captured a large number of weapons from the government.
“Also, the recent incident in Abudwaq city where civilians and community militias seized weapons and other weapons they received from the Mogadishu government further shows the difficult security situation,” the statement said.
The text also said that the current situation is a warning to Somalia’s neighboring countries, and shows that the decision to lift the arms embargo from Somalia is not wise.
Finally, Somaliland is calling on the international community to re-evaluate the arms embargo on Somalia to avoid another crisis, the text said.
Militants of the community seized two weapons trucks in Abudwaq district on Monday.
