The United States government has said that it has discussed with Somaliland that any disputes in the region should be resolved through dialogue, and that elections should be held on time.
The American Ambassador to Somalia Richard H. Riley, who had a meeting on Thursday with the President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, discussed with the President how to end the conflicts in the region through dialogue.
“The ambassador urged to work on cooperation in the region, and to use dialogue and diplomacy to solve regional conflicts and security challenges, and he talked to government officials to hold elections on time,” said a statement issued by the American Embassy in Mogadishu.
The ambassador said that his government is committed to supporting democracy in the region. He also held a meeting with non-governmental organizations and discussed how to improve relations with the United States.
Ambassador Riley’s visit coincides with a period of tension based on economic and strategic interests resulting from the understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia between Djibouti and Somaliland.
