More than three thousand families were displaced in the areas of Badaweyne, Xinlabi, Aad and Amara, after these areas were recently recaptured by Al-Shabaab group.

The forces of the Somali government and those in the area began to withdraw from those areas on March 10, 2024, which led to the displacement of many people who fear revenge attacks from Al-Shabaab.

These families were displaced to Galkayo, Mirjicley, Wisil, and Bajeela. Most of these displaced people were vulnerable people, including the elderly, children, women, and people with special needs, who undertook dangerous journeys on foot to find safety and shelter.

The Galmudug Committee for Refugees and Displaced Persons (GCRI) who assisted the Charitable Organizations, said that the people who suffered the most were herders, who used to move their animals from place to place in order to get safety, forest and water.

The committee also said that around 25% of the displaced women are widows who have been widowed in the past 6 months, due to the military operations that liberated the area.
