Two Cuban doctors who were in the hands of the Al-Shabaab group were killed in an air strike by the United States, according to the Al-Shabaab group.
The al-Shabaab group said in a message on their Telegram channel that the doctors were killed in an airstrike carried out by the United States on Thursday in the Lower Jubba region in southern Somalia.
Al-Shabaab said that the United States deliberately targeted these prisoners that they had been holding for several years.
“We are not confirming or denying the claims of the terrorist group,” said a police officer who spoke to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that it could not confirm the death of the two Cuban doctors Assel Herrera Correa and Landy Rodríguez Hernandez.
On April 12, 2019, Al-Shabaab abducted the Cuban doctors while they were on their way to work in the North Eastern region of Kenya, where they killed one of their bodyguards.
