The United Nations Security Council has announced that the reduction of 3,000 African Union troops has been postponed for one month, as negotiations between the African Union and the Somali government continue.
The Security Council called on the ATMIS mission to fulfill the mandate of the African Union.
The Security Council called on the Government of Somalia to discuss its request first with the African Union, and then return to the Security Council with an agreed proposal.
On the other hand, in order to facilitate dialogue between the Government of Somalia and the African Union, the Security Council will ask the Secretary General of the United Nations to suspend the planned changes in the support it provides to UNSOS.
In particular, the Security Council will request UNSOS to continue to support up to 17,626 troops in the ATMIS operation.
A few days ago the Government of Somalia asked the security council to postpone for three months the second phase of reducing ATMIS.
Apparently, the Security Council refused to suspend the reduction of ATMIS for three months, and it was allowed for one month, under the condition that the Government discuss this request with the AU.
