More than 700 deaths were recorded in Somalia between 27 May and 23 June 2023, according to a database compiled by ACLED, a project that analyzes armed conflicts.
The death was said to be the result of dozens of attacks by the Al-Shabaab group targeting the African Union ATMIS forces, and those of the Federal Government of Somalia.
Galgudud region has the highest number of deaths, with more than 280 deaths recorded during the period. Lower Shabelle region was next, with more than 200 deaths recorded.
Al-Shabaab said they killed more than 220 Somali soldiers during two attacks in areas under El-Dheer district in Galgaduud region.
The data collection also states that the political conflict has weakened the campaign against the Al-Shabaab group that has been going on for the past few months.
One of the things that stopped the second phase of the Al-Shabaab war is the dispute in Hiran region between the president of Hirshabeelle and the former governor of Hiran region.
The conflict intensified when the president of Hirshabelle dismissed the governor of Hiran region on June 16.
However, when ATMIS began to prepare for the withdrawal of its forces, Al-Shabaab attacks against ATMIS and government forces increased.
Al-Shabaab is taking advantage of political conflicts. And they get an opportunity to regroup and plan attacks.
This report analyzes the various political crises in Somalia and their impact on al-Shabaab activities throughout the country.
