The African Union Mission in Somalia said on Wednesday that they have begun reducing the number of ATMIS troops in Somalia, with plans to eventually hand over the country’s security to Somali forces.
“The African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia has begun to conduct troop reductions in compliance with the (UN Resolution) which mandates ATMIS to cut down 2,000 troops by the end of June 2023,” a statement from ATMIS said.
This move comes as some of Somalia’s neighboring countries are concerned about reducing ATMIS. They said Al-Shabaab are still a threat to the country’s security.
Last month, 54 Ugandan peacekeepers were killed when Al-Shabaab attacked a military base in Buulo Mareer.
