Former Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Rooble today held a press conference in which he strongly attacked the current President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing him of using clan-based rhetoric to stay in office.
Rooble claimed that President Hassan always uses the slogan “I am from Mogadishu as a clan, so how can I hand over power, while Farmajo, who is from a clan that has no influence in Mogadishu, tried to hold on to the seat? Why can’t I give up?”
Rooble described the statement as dangerous, saying it was a clear indication that President Hassan Sheikh was not ready to transfer power peacefully.
He added that such rhetoric threatens the political stability of the country and could further fuel clan divisions in Somalia.
Rooble also warned that such statements undermine public confidence in the democratic process and could create new political tensions.
The press conference comes at a time when Somalia is facing increasing political uncertainty, with fears that political conflicts could flare up again, especially as elections approach.
