Strengthening Maritime and Air Transport Cooperation Discussed by Somalia and Yemen

Yemeni Minister of Transport, Dr. Abdisalam Hamid, met with the Somali Ambassador to Yemen, Abdulhakim Mohamed, in the interim capital of Aden, to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two countries, especially in the areas of maritime and air transport.

Minister Hamid said in the meeting that the historical, social and political relations between Yemen and Somalia are deep and long-standing, and that the two countries have common interests and relations based on social, economic and security aspects.

Dr. Hamid indicated that the Ministry of Transport is ready to promote trade and economic exchanges between the two countries, and is also ready to support the opening of direct flights by Somali airlines, and to grant them operating licenses that will benefit both peoples.

The Minister also said that the Yemeni government plans to purchase two small aircraft for domestic flights, which can also be used for trips between Yemen and Somalia and other countries in the region.

In addition, Minister Hamid stressed the importance of accelerating trade between the ports of the two countries, and of cooperating to combat the smuggling of weapons and illegal goods from some countries in the Horn of Africa to Yemen.

For his part, the Somali ambassador to Yemen, Abdulhakim Mohamed, thanked the Yemeni government and the Ministry of Transport for their efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, indicating that Somalia is committed to further strengthening the brotherly relations and cooperation between the two governments.
