Heavy fighting is currently underway between Puntland security forces and ISIS in Ceelka Il-Abbal, one of the most important ISIS command posts in the Al-Aqsaad mountains.

Security officials we have received information from told us that Puntland forces launched a planned attack this morning on Ceelka Il-Abbal, where the deputy leader of the ISIS group in Somalia, Abdirahman Fahiye Isse Mohamud, is widely suspected to be.

Ceelka Il-Abbal is a natural defensive area, and is considered the largest ISIS command post currently gathered. This area is located in the Qansaxdheere stream, and is close to the coastal villages of Buruc and Bacaad, in the Bosaso district.

The reason ISIS chose this strategic location is believed to be that it can help the group’s leaders and key members escape to the sea if the fighting in Al-Aqsaad becomes difficult.

Security sources say that so far, casualties have been reported in the fighting, with bodies of ISIS members found in the fighting areas. Puntland has not yet provided any details about the fighting.
