The Minister of Public Works and Housing of Somalia, Elmi Mohamed Nur, has announced a new plan by the federal government to build 2,000 houses for internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Speaking at the Banking and Finance Conference in Mogadishu, the Minister said the project is part of a broader effort to alleviate the difficult circumstances faced by the displaced.

“Two thousand houses will be built for our displaced people,” the Minister said, noting that the houses will be specifically designed to meet the specific needs of the IDPs, and will be offered at a low-cost price to make them easier to obtain.

However, the Minister did not provide further details on the project’s funding sources, implementation timeline, and other financial aspects.

According to the latest data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in January 2025, more than 4.1 million people are internally displaced in Somalia, representing almost 21% of the total Somali population.

The announced project is considered an important step, but many questions remain regarding its actual implementation.
