The Government of Qatar has reiterated its commitment to continue providing technical support to strengthen Somalia’s human rights capacity, so that Somalia can fulfill its national and international obligations, in line with its priorities and needs.
The statement was made by Jassim Ibrahim Al-Malki, Third Undersecretary of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, while participating in a panel discussion with the Independent Expert on Human Rights in Somalia, as part of the 60th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
Al-Malki noted that Somalia still faces many challenges that affect its stability, security and economic growth, which, he said, requires the international community to show solidarity and shared responsibility to support Somalia’s national process.
He also stressed that political reforms are a key pillar of Somali state-building, particularly the completion of constitutional review, the establishment of state institutions, the strengthening of the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
He underlined the importance of all Somali parties participating in these processes in order to achieve full legitimacy based on national consensus.
The Government of Qatar has long been one of the countries that supports Somalia’s efforts towards peace, reconstruction and the advancement of human rights, and has frequently participated in international and regional conferences in support of Somalia’s state-building.
