A cargo ship that departed from Jamnagar in Gujarat, India, and was heading to Bosaso, the capital of Bari region, caught fire off the coast of Gujarat.
The ship was said to be carrying 950 tonnes of rice and 100 tonnes of sugar belonging to Somali traders from Puntland.
The ship’s management confirmed that the Fire Department had sent three fire engines to the scene, while ambulances and local police forces had also arrived to assist in the rescue operation.
The ship was operated by Jamnagar-based HRM. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Such accidents involving boats and ships transporting goods to Bosaso are common.
The main reason is said to be carelessness during the May to September monsoon season, when the sea is at its most dangerous.
