Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Somalia, Amb. Suleiman Dedefo, has strongly criticized the Arab League, accusing it of serving Egyptian interests, especially those against Ethiopia, especially in the issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Ambassador Dedefo, in a strong statement on his X account (formerly known as Twitter), questioned the role and purpose of the Arab League, noting that it has more to do than Ethiopia’s criticism.
“Is it an Arab League or a League that implements Egypt’s anti-Ethiopian policies?” he said in his statement.
He added that the Arab League ignores the problems of its member states, which are struggling with war, displacement, and famine, while constantly focusing on Ethiopia’s water use plan.
“Why is the Arab League putting Ethiopia’s water issues on its permanent agenda, when there are so many problems that need to be resolved? What legal or legal basis does it have to tell Ethiopia to seek permission from Egypt to exploit its natural resources?” Dedefo said.
The ambassador also said that the Arab League has made it clear that it does not truly represent all member states, which shows its bias towards Egypt.
The statement comes at a time when the dispute between Ethiopia and Egypt is still ongoing, especially over the GERD dam, which Egypt fears will negatively affect the supply of water from the Nile River.
The ambassador’s remarks are expected to further fuel diplomatic debate in the region, as Ethiopia continues to build on the dam, while Egypt seeks support from Arab countries to put pressure on Addis Ababa.
