The Northeastern Somali Regional Parliament has elected Dr. Aden Abdullahi Aw-Hasan as its Speaker, after winning 53 votes, while the rival candidate Abdiqafar Mohamud Mohamed (Dheeliye) received 29 votes.

The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, congratulated the new Speaker, saying that this election is an important step in strengthening the building of the state and the various institutions working for the interests of the people and the development of the region.

“I hope that God will make it easy for the new Speaker to fulfill the heavy responsibility entrusted to him, believing that he will play a prominent role in ensuring state-building, completing the electoral process and upholding the rule of law,” President Hassan Sheikh said in a press release.

The Somali President also commended the MPs of the Northeastern Somali Regional Parliament, wishing them success in the remaining elections and building the state.

The new Speaker of the Northeastern Somali Regional Parliament was the Minister of Interior in the former SSC Khaatumo administration. He is originally from Aricaddeeye area of ​​Sool region.

Dr. Aden Abdullahi Aw-hasan was elected as the Vice President of SSC Khaatumo administration in 2023. He is described as a veteran politician. He is very close to President Firdhiye, under whom he was a minister.
