The Somali National Army, especially the Danab Commandos, in collaboration with international partners, carried out a planned airstrike in Awdheegle district of Lower Shabelle region.
The airstrike operation specifically targeted strongholds and shelters where leaders and militias of the Al-Shabaab group were hiding.
A press release from the Somali Ministry of Defense stated that more than 100 members of the militia and key leaders of the group were killed in the operation.
“During the operation, the forces killed more than 100 members of the Khawarij group, including key leaders. The holes and shelters where the group was trying to hide were destroyed by airstrikes, while Danab units entered the enemy positions to ensure the success of the operation,” the press release from the Ministry of Defense said.
The press release issued by the Ministry of Defense did not mention the names of the Al-Shabaab leaders killed in the operation carried out in the Awdheegle district of the Lower Shabelle region.
The Ministry also indicated that the leaders and militias killed in the operation were working to prepare to resist the operation called “Silent Storm” that the Somali National Army and AUSSOM are conducting in the Lower Shabelle region.
