At least 20 people are reported dead after two boats capsized off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa on Wednesday.

The migrants on board the boats, who came from Libya, Pakistan, Sudan and Somalia, had been at sea for a long time, officials on the island said.

Authorities on the island of Lampedusa said the bodies were being examined for medical reasons, but that despite the limited space available to hold the bodies, doctors on the island were working quickly to complete the tests.

60 people were rescued from the incident, with four of them suffering from injuries such as broken bones and were taken to hospital for treatment.

The body of a one-year-old girl was also found in the water, adding to the already dire situation.
