President of the Federal Government of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Appoints National Security Advisor

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today appointed Ambassador Aweys Haji Yusuf as his National Security Advisor.

The appointment of the new National Security Advisor to the President of Somalia comes after the recent resignation of the former Presidential Advisor, Hussein Moalim Mahmoud.

The new advisor, a statement from the Somali Presidency stated that Ambassador Aweys Haji Yusuf is an individual with deep experience in matters related to national administration and security.

The new National Security Advisor to the President of Somalia, Aweys Haji, has previously held senior positions in some of the country’s past governments, and managed the Policy Planning Office of the National Presidency from 2012–2016, where he was a leader in formulating general policies on security, the economy, and government reform.

“He led high-level security and economic cooperation discussions between the Federal Government of Somalia and its international partners. From 2023 to 2025, he served as Somalia’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, playing a role in strengthening the security and strategic relations between the two countries,” said a statement from the Somali Presidency.

Finally, the President wished Advisor Aweys to play his role in strengthening national security and the government’s strategy in the fight against terrorism, and he also thanked the President for the work he did in developing national security issues during his term in office, which has been in office since May 2022.
