The Federal Government of Somalia and the European Union today launched a Cooperation Process that paves the way for a new partnership that will take place over the next two years.

Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, the representative of the Vice President of the European Union, said that the cooperation process focuses on three issues, namely, inclusive politics and democracy, security and stability, and social economic development.

“The European Union and Somalia have been friends for a long time, and this comprehensive process that has been defined on the issues that are challenging for both sides is an example that our cooperation is becoming fruitful. The European Union and Somalia are working together to enable sustainable peace, security and development through a system based on international rules”, said Mr. Fontelles.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Abshir Omar Haruse, said that this agreement plays a major role in the success of the government’s plans, the completion of the country’s constitution, and the development of the courts.

The Prime Minister of the Government of Somalia, Hamse Abdi Barre, who made a speech at the launch, praised this move, expressing the importance of this effort to strengthen cooperation between Somalia and the European Union.

“This cooperation plan that was launched today paves the way for a new relationship, and it is proof of our commitment to use this cooperation in a way that will benefit our people, and ensure that its benefits reach all Somali citizens. The European Union is a reliable partner with whom we have close cooperation, and I am sure that this Cooperation Process will lead to significant progress in matters of importance for government building, security, safety, economic growth and decentralization of government services”, said Ra Prime Minister Hamse.

Announcing this agreement, the European Union’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, Annette Weber, announced that €20.5 million will be provided by the European Union in the new budget for Somalia in September.
