Somalia’s drought relief envoy, MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, has called on the Somali government to hold accountable the charitable organizations that receive funds to help Somalia in the drought.
The drought envoy who gave an interview to VOA, said that it is not possible to give billions of dollars to Somalia every year, yet the situation has not changed, and he clearly said that the charity organizations are not accountable.
“Last year you asked for $1.4 billion, now you are asking for $2.8 billion, and the problem is increasing. Where does that money go? Somalia and the international community have agreed on this accountability. The Somali government is not accountable to the organizations that work in charity,” said MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame.
The drought relief envoy pointed out that in order for Somalia to get out of dependence on international aid, it needs to be held accountable by organizations that receive funds for humanitarian issues in Somalia.
On the other hand, the Somali drought relief envoy said that there is a need for the Somali government to change its approach to humanitarian issues. He said that there are many parallels, and the priority that should be given to these issues that the government has not given.
He said that the government needs people who are able to take care of the charitable organizations, that the government should come up with a priority policy to demand what it wants, and that there should be cooperation between the government agencies.
