The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (PSC) has sent the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo to participate in the efforts and negotiations to prevent the worsening tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia.<\/p>\n

The relationship between the two countries reached its worst point after Somaliland signed an agreement with Ethiopia on January 1, which allows it to control a port and a military base in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n

Obasanjo is facing a difficult task as the Somali government has refused to mediate with Ethiopia, until the agreement that violates Somalia’s independence with Somaliland is revoked.<\/p>\n

The peace and security commission of the African Union called on the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Federal Republic of Somalia to adhere to the basic principles of the African Union and international law.<\/p>\n

The African Union considers Somaliland as a region of Somalia.<\/p>\n

However, Somalia, which has announced that it will not enter into any dialogue with Ethiopia if it does not withdraw from the agreement with Somaliland, may affect the negotiations that the African Union wants to do between the two countries.<\/p>\n

Somalia has accused Ethiopia of violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia. The government said that if Ethiopia does not withdraw from the agreement, it will suffer bad consequences.<\/p>\n
