Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni formed an eight-member Committee on Tuesday to address parliamentary disputes ahead of next month’s parliamentary and presidential elections.<\/p>\n

The Committee for the Approval and Resolution of Parliamentary Disputes is composed of Isaac Ahmed Hassan as Chairman and members Saeed Hirsi Bulhan, Abdi Abdullahi Hashi (Council), Abdirashid Saleban Geelle, Farah Abdi Dhalac, Mohamud Mohamed Ahmed, Ahmed Abdi Ali, and Secretary Yusuf Saudi Abdi. During his announcement, President Deni emphasized the importance of this committee in ensuring a smooth electoral process amidst the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n

However, the exclusion of Vice President Ahmed Karaash from the consultation process has raised concerns about potential challenges to the committee’s legitimacy and the possibility of\u00a0opposition factions<\/a>\u00a0forming rival groups.<\/p>\n

This announcement follows Puntland’s\u00a0recent decision to continue<\/a>\u00a0with the clan-based ballot system, abandoning earlier plans for direct universal suffrage. This shift marks a significant departure from the region’s local council elections held in May, which were the first direct polls in over 50 years and seen as a step towards democratization.<\/p>\n

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in a statement, expressing hope for a peaceful and consensual election process. His administration, which is advocating for an end to the indirect election system, considers these developments in Puntland crucial to Somalia’s broader political evolution.<\/p>\n
