The administration led by President Joe Biden is facing calls for an overhaul of the US strategy in Somalia, while the US is still engaged in a 16-year-old campaign against Al-Shabaab.<\/p>\n

According to a report published in Foreign Affairs, the way the United States is currently using military power and airstrikes to control al-Shabaab is unlikely to lead to lasting stability and peace.<\/p>\n

The US has carried out more than 280 airstrikes in Somalia since 2007.<\/p>\n

Critics argue that the United States needs to shift its focus to supporting political reconciliation and stabilization efforts.<\/p>\n

The government of Somalia is working hard to consolidate the territorial gains against Al-Shabaab and to deal with the division of society.<\/p>\n

Later this month, the United States will join talks between Somalia and its international partners. Analysts say this represents an opportunity for the United States to push for a comprehensive political solution based on reconciliation.<\/p>\n
