The African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has reaffirmed its commitment to support Somalia-led military operations against Al-Shabaab, to ensure peace and security in Somalia before not reached by December 2024.<\/p>\n

“Our goal, as ATMIS and all stakeholders of this mission, is to see Somalia safe, stable, prosperous and living in peace with itself and the rest of the world,” ATMIS Commander Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding said as he walked. A press conference held at the ATMIS Center in Mogadishu.<\/p>\n

In the first phase of the reduction that ended in June, ATMIS withdrew 2000 soldiers and handed over to the Government six bases where it was already operating in accordance with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 2628 and 2670 (2022).<\/p>\n

Together with the United Nations and the Federal Government of Somalia (DFS), ATMIS has already completed a technical assessment of the first phase, and is now preparing to withdraw 3000 more soldiers from Somalia.<\/p>\n

The recommendations of the technical assessment will be presented to the UN Security Council on 31 August, with more information on preparations for the second phase expected on 15 September.<\/p>\n

The withdrawal of 3000 soldiers in the second phase is expected to be completed by the end of September, according to the United Nations resolution number 2687.<\/p>\n

Lt. Gen. Okiding praised the ATMIS forces for their military operations in collaboration with the government forces, which are ongoing in Galgaduud region.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Commander of the Armed Forces, urged the international community to continue supporting the peace process in key areas including the creation of troops, the lifting of arms embargoes, capacity building, and the provision of funds that could be a lasting solution to ATMIS and DFS.<\/p>\n

He praised the Somali National Defense Force (SDF) who succeeded in taking over six Forward Bases (FOB) that were handed over in June, noting that ATMIS will continue to support the transition process that Somalia is leading. which will ultimately hand over complete security responsibility. at the end of next year.<\/p>\n
