The-Star \u2013 Kenya yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sierra Leone over a working relationship between their troops in pursuit of al Shabaab insurgents in Somalia. <\/p>\n
Defence minister Yusuf Haji and his Sierra Leone counterpart Major (rtd) A. Baco Conteh signed the MoU at the Department of Defence Headquarters in Nairobi yesterday morning and said
\nthe fight against terrorism was going well and vowed that it will be won.<\/p>\n
The Sierra Leonian delegation arrived in Kenya two days go for the signing of the MoU to finalise the process of deployment in an area that the al Qaeda-linked insurgent group has the highest number of fighters.<\/p>\n
The MoU signals the preparation of the final assault on al Shabaab\u2019s stronghold of Kismayu which the African Union Mission to Somalia wants to capture before the expiry Somalia\u2019s Transitional Federal Government\u2019s mandate.<\/p>\n
Sierra Leone has deployed eight hundred and fifty troops to join Kenya Defence Force (KDF) troops deployed in southern Somalia in Sector 2 of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM).<\/p>\n
Sierra Leonian troops are scheduled to join KDF troops in July while Djibouti will control Sector 4.Uganda and Burundi control Sector 1 and 3 in AMISOM\u2019s multi pronged attack of the al Qaeda linked insurgents group.<\/p>\n
Sector 2 will include areas along the Kenya\/Somalia border including Jubaland and Gedo all the way to Kismayu. Maj-Gen Simon Karanja was appointed AMISOM\u2019s deputy force commander In charge of Operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
