{"id":5717,"date":"2012-04-24T22:22:34","date_gmt":"2012-04-24T22:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/warsom.com\/wararka\/?p=5717"},"modified":"2012-04-24T22:22:34","modified_gmt":"2012-04-24T22:22:34","slug":"somalia-a-journalist-wounded-another-beat-up-by-police-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/warsom.com\/wararka\/2012\/04\/somalia-a-journalist-wounded-another-beat-up-by-police-in\/","title":{"rendered":"Somalia: A Journalist Wounded, another Beat up by Police in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mogadishu, April 24, 2012<\/p>\n<p>The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is alarmed by the<br \/>\njournalist slightly wounded by a stray bullet in Mogadishu on Tuesday evening<br \/>\naround 6: 30PM local time, while the union condemns the police<\/p>\n<p>beat up of a journalist in Mogadishu on 23 April, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The editor of the privately owned SIMBA radio, Abdiasis Mohamed Diirie was<br \/>\nhit by a stray bullet on the left leg below the knee and penetrated the muscle<br \/>\non Tuesday evening 24 April, 2012 around 6:30pm local time at the Bakaro<br \/>\nmarket.<\/p>\n<p>The incident happened shortly after he left the radio station heading his<br \/>\nhome, following a firefight in that neighborhood, according to Abdiasis Mohamed<br \/>\nDiiriye who spoke with NUSOJ over the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cI am in good health situation and currently staying at my home.\u201d Abdiasis<br \/>\nMohamed Diiriye told NUSOJ, \u201cIt is just a slight wound and I came home on my<br \/>\nfeet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a separate incident, a policeman beat up Mohamed Abdiwahab Nor kown as<br \/>\n(Abuja), Reporter for the privately Sahan Radio on Monday 23 April, 2012.<br \/>\nThe incident happened when the journalist tried to enter a cafeteria at the<br \/>\nMinistry of Women affairs \u2013 where journalists always gather and chat \u2013 amid the<br \/>\nAnniversary of the Somali Military Day was taking place in the city and the<br \/>\nsecurity of the city was highly tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cThe policeman who was keeping guard at the area stopped me along with other<br \/>\njournalists, I showed my Identity Card, but did not let us go, while he let<br \/>\nother journalists enter the cafeteria.\u201d Mohamed Abdiwahab Nor told NUSOJ, \u201cHe<br \/>\nwas singling us from other journalists, I don\u2019t know the reason.\u201d He added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I and my colleague journalist Ismail Haghi Omar left, he hit me at the<br \/>\nback with back of his gun, I fell to the ground and he stood with his boot over<br \/>\nmy neck squeezing me on the ground, you see how my face has swollen.\u201d Mr. Nor<br \/>\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemned the act and<br \/>\ncalled for the Somalia Police Chief to take administrative measures against<br \/>\npolice personnel found such offenses to ensure that the journalists are<br \/>\nrespected and are allowed to carry out their duties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe acknowledge the extensive work the police are doing in restoring the<br \/>\nsecurity in Mogadishu, but it unfortunate we are getting troubles from the<br \/>\npolice and call for its immediate end.\u201d Mohamed Ibrahim,<\/p>\n<p>NUSOJ Secretary General said, \u201cI take this opportunity to call for<br \/>\ninvestigations into the murder cases against the journalists, which none of the<br \/>\nkillers has been brought to court yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>For further information, please contact:<\/p>\n<p>National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ)<\/p>\n<p>Second Floor, Press House, Taleex Street, KM4 Area, Hodan District,<\/p>\n<p>Mogadishu, Somalia, Tel: +252 1 859 944,<\/p>\n<p>e-mail: nusoj@nusoj.org.so \/ newsletter@nusoj.org.so<\/p>\n<p>Internet: http:\/\/www.nusoj.org.so<\/p>\n<p>Follow us on Twitter: @NUSOJ_Somalia<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mogadishu, April 24, 2012 The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is alarmed by the journalist slightly wounded by a stray bullet in Mogadishu on Tuesday evening around 6: 30PM local time, while the union condemns the police beat up of a journalist in Mogadishu on 23 April, 2012.
