The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is alarmed by the
\njournalist slightly wounded by a stray bullet in Mogadishu on Tuesday evening
\naround 6: 30PM local time, while the union condemns the police<\/p>\n
beat up of a journalist in Mogadishu on 23 April, 2012.<\/p>\n
The editor of the privately owned SIMBA radio, Abdiasis Mohamed Diirie was
\nhit by a stray bullet on the left leg below the knee and penetrated the muscle
\non Tuesday evening 24 April, 2012 around 6:30pm local time at the Bakaro
\nmarket.<\/p>\n
The incident happened shortly after he left the radio station heading his
\nhome, following a firefight in that neighborhood, according to Abdiasis Mohamed
\nDiiriye who spoke with NUSOJ over the phone.
\n\u201cI am in good health situation and currently staying at my home.\u201d Abdiasis
\nMohamed Diiriye told NUSOJ, \u201cIt is just a slight wound and I came home on my
\nfeet.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a separate incident, a policeman beat up Mohamed Abdiwahab Nor kown as
\n(Abuja), Reporter for the privately Sahan Radio on Monday 23 April, 2012.
\nThe incident happened when the journalist tried to enter a cafeteria at the
\nMinistry of Women affairs \u2013 where journalists always gather and chat \u2013 amid the
\nAnniversary of the Somali Military Day was taking place in the city and the
\nsecurity of the city was highly tightened.
\n\u201cThe policeman who was keeping guard at the area stopped me along with other
\njournalists, I showed my Identity Card, but did not let us go, while he let
\nother journalists enter the cafeteria.\u201d Mohamed Abdiwahab Nor told NUSOJ, \u201cHe
\nwas singling us from other journalists, I don\u2019t know the reason.\u201d He added.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I and my colleague journalist Ismail Haghi Omar left, he hit me at the
\nback with back of his gun, I fell to the ground and he stood with his boot over
\nmy neck squeezing me on the ground, you see how my face has swollen.\u201d Mr. Nor
\nadded.<\/p>\n
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemned the act and
\ncalled for the Somalia Police Chief to take administrative measures against
\npolice personnel found such offenses to ensure that the journalists are
\nrespected and are allowed to carry out their duties.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe acknowledge the extensive work the police are doing in restoring the
\nsecurity in Mogadishu, but it unfortunate we are getting troubles from the
\npolice and call for its immediate end.\u201d Mohamed Ibrahim,<\/p>\n
NUSOJ Secretary General said, \u201cI take this opportunity to call for
\ninvestigations into the murder cases against the journalists, which none of the
\nkillers has been brought to court yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
