Somalia would accept the involvement of Ethiopian\r\nforces in its battle against al-Qaeda-linked militants as it seeks the\r\nexpansion of an African Union-led peacekeeping mission, a government\r\nspokesman said.\r\n\u00a0\r\nSomalia is unaware of any Ethiopian soldiers crossing its border,\r\nAbdirahman Omar Osman, a spokesman for the government, said today by\r\nphone from Mogadishu, the capital. The New York Times reported today\r\nthat hundreds of Ethiopian soldiers with artillery and tanks crossed\r\ninto Somalia yesterday.\r\n\u00a0\r\n\u201cWe don\u2019t know of any Ethiopian troops crossing into our territory,\u201d\r\nOsman said. \u201cIllegal troops can\u2019t cross a country\u2019s legal border.\u201d\r\n\u00a0\r\nKenyan forces entered Somalia last month after accusing al- Shabaab\r\nmilitants of abducting at least four, foreign aid workers and\r\nholidaymakers in the country, as well as murdering a British man,\r\nbetween September and October. Al-Shabaab, which is battling the\r\nWestern-backed government headed by Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, is\r\nseeking to establish an Islamic state in the Horn of Africa nation.\r\n\u00a0\r\nU.S.-backed Ethiopian forces invaded Somalia in 2006 to oust an\r\nIslamist government that had captured southern Somalia. They withdrew\r\nin January 2009 after becoming bogged down in a guerrilla war with\r\nal-Shabaab.\r\n\u00a0\r\nEthiopian Role Discussed\r\n\u00a0\r\nEthiopia denied its troops moved into Somalia.\r\n\u00a0\r\n\u201cWe have made no commitment to enter Somalia on our own,\u201d Bereket\r\nSimon, a government spokesman, said today by phone from the capital,\r\nAddis Ababa. \u201cWe are waiting for the Intergovernmental Authority on\r\nDevelopment.\u201d\r\n\u00a0\r\nEast African nations will discuss sending Ethiopian troops to Somalia\r\nat a meeting of the six-nation Intergovernmental Authority on\r\nDevelopment in Addis Ababa on Nov. 25, Ethiopia\u2019s Foreign Ministry\r\nsaid on Nov. 18.\r\n\u00a0\r\nAny agreement to send more soldiers under the command of the African\r\nUnion Mission in Somalia, a peacekeeping force operated by the\r\ncontinental body with a mandate from the United Nations, would be\r\nwelcome, Osman said.\r\n\u00a0\r\n\u201cWe welcome anything that could support us getting rid of the\r\nextremists on our soil,\u201d he said.\r\n\u00a0\r\nKenya would \u201cbe prepared to work with anyone who is committed to\r\nworking toward the stabilization of Somalia, Major Emmanuel Chirchir,\r\nspokesman for the Kenya Defence Forces, said in a phone interview\r\ntoday.\r\n\u00a0\r\nKenyan Offensive Slowed\r\n\u00a0\r\nThe Kenyan offensive is moving slower than expected and its troops\r\nneed more military backing, Peter Pham, director of the Michael S.\r\n Ansari Africa Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington, said Nov.\r\n18 in response to e-mailed questions.\r\n\u00a0\r\n\u2018\u2018It seems inevitable that Ethiopia will have to re-enter Somalia,\u2019\u2019\r\nsaid Pham. \u2018\u2018The Kenyans, having foolishly charged in with apparently\r\nlittle thought as to realistic strategic objectives and clearly\r\ninadequate forces, are now bogged down and need an additional front\r\nopened against al-Shabaab to relieve the pressure on themselves.\u2019\u2019\r\n\u00a0\r\nSomalia, which hasn\u2019t had a functioning government since the fall of\r\ndictator Mohamed Siad Barre\u2019s in 1991, has been the hardest hit by the\r\nworst regional drought in six decades, leaving 750,000 at risk of\r\nstarvation, according to the UN.\r\n\u00a0\r\nFire from Kenyan military jets, supported by navy ships, destroyed an\r\nal-Shabaab training facility yesterday in the Badade district of Lower\r\nJuba, Chirchir said.\r\n\u00a0\r\nIslamic militants yesterday ambushed and killed eight Kenyan soldiers\r\nin an area near the Somalia-Kenya border, al- Shabaab said in an\r\ne-mailed statement today.\r\n\u00a0\r\nContribute By:AM<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
