{"id":4343,"date":"2011-11-22T14:49:46","date_gmt":"2011-11-22T14:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/warsom.com\/wararka\/?p=4343"},"modified":"2011-11-22T14:49:46","modified_gmt":"2011-11-22T14:49:46","slug":"eritrea-wants-un-action-on-kenya-over-somalia-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/warsom.com\/wararka\/2011\/11\/eritrea-wants-un-action-on-kenya-over-somalia-claim\/","title":{"rendered":"Eritrea wants UN action on Kenya over Somalia claim."},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"https:\/\/warsom.com\/wararka\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/eratara.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4348\" title=\"eratara\" src=\"https:\/\/warsom.com\/wararka\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/eratara.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eritrea has complained to the United Nations Security<br \/>\nCouncil about Kenyan allegations that it sent weapons to Islamist<br \/>\nrebels in Somalia, calling for an independent investigation to judge<br \/>\nthe dispute.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nForeign Minister Osman Saleh said in a letter to the Council that<br \/>\nEritrea was confident an investigation would find Nairobi&#8217;s<br \/>\n&#8220;defamatory&#8221; accusations to be baseless, and urged the United Nations<br \/>\nto take action against Kenya in the dispute.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nNairobi has accused Eritrea of flying in weapons for al Shabaab, an<br \/>\ninsurgent group liked to al Qaeda which has been fighting the<br \/>\nWestern-backed Somali government since 2007, and which is now also<br \/>\nbattling Kenyan forces.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;If, as Eritrea confidently believes, the investigation determines<br \/>\nthat there is no basis whatsoever to the very serious and harmful<br \/>\naccusations by the government of Kenya, Eritrea calls on the Security<br \/>\nCouncil to take action that would redress the injustice suffered by<br \/>\nthe people and government of Eritrea,&#8221; Saleh wrote in the letter, seen<br \/>\nby Reuters.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;Defamation of a member state of the United Nations should not be<br \/>\nindulged in with impunity and must not be tolerated, given its<br \/>\nnegative implications for regional peace and security,&#8221; he said in the<br \/>\nletter, dated November 16.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nKenya sent troops into Somalia, its anarchic neighbour, last month to<br \/>\nrout the insurgents which it blames for kidnappings of Western aid<br \/>\nworkers and tourists on Kenyan soil, and frequent cross-border<br \/>\nincursions.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nNairobi says it has credible information that consignments of arms<br \/>\nwere flown to the Somali town of Baidoa from Eritrea. Kenyan officials<br \/>\nhave said that Eritrean denials are not enough, and that it should go<br \/>\nfurther and denounce al Shabaab.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nSaleh&#8217;s letter to Jose Filipe Cabral, the Security Council&#8217;s rotating<br \/>\npresident for November, gave no details on who might conduct the<br \/>\ninvestigation, nor did it say what action Eritrea wanted.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nHowever, Eritrea&#8217;s envoy to the African Union said the Kenyan<br \/>\nallegations should be publicly dismissed as a first step.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;It is up to the UN Security Council to take whatever action it feels<br \/>\nappropriate and necessary to rectify such baseless allegations and<br \/>\ndefamation of a member state,&#8221; envoy Girma Asmerom told Reuters.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;However, as a starter, I strongly feel that the UN Security Council<br \/>\nshould urge the government of Kenya to publicly rescind its baseless<br \/>\naccusation against Eritrea,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;Frenzied Campaign&#8221;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nKenyan officials have said the weapons consisted of shoulder-fired<br \/>\nrockets, grenades and small arms munitions, and that they have been<br \/>\nmoved to areas in southern and central Somalia.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nSlapped with an arms embargo, assets freeze and a travel ban for some<br \/>\nof its officials in 2009, Eritrea faces another round of measures over<br \/>\ncharges it was aiding militants fighting to overthrow the<br \/>\ninternationally-backed Mogadishu government.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAsmara accuses Ethiopia of being behind the claims through a &#8220;frenzied<br \/>\ncampaign&#8221; to isolate and weaken its government.
