The British government has issued a new travel advisory for Kenya, advising its citizens against non-essential travel to the town of Moyale and areas near the Ethiopian border—specifically within a five-kilometer radius of the border—due to security concerns and the risk of attacks by Al-Shabaab.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice while maintaining existing travel restrictions for parts of the Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Lamu, and Tana River counties.

Moyale and its surrounding five-kilometer radius have been added to the list of locations where the British government advises its citizens to avoid non-essential travel. This area also encompasses the border crossing point between Kenya and Ethiopia.

The British advisory also applies to large parts of northern and eastern Kenya, particularly areas near the Somali border, which have previously been the site of attacks linked to the Al-Shabaab group.

The areas covered by the warning include Mandera County, parts of Wajir County (excluding Wajir town), and most of Garissa County (excluding Garissa town and certain other specific areas). Additionally, parts of Lamu County are included in the warning, with the exception of Lamu and Manda islands.

Meanwhile, the British government has warned its citizens that traveling to these areas against official advice could result in the loss of travel insurance coverage, potentially leaving individuals responsible for covering the costs of medical care, emergency assistance, and urgent evacuation.

The British Foreign Office has clarified that this warning does not constitute a travel ban issued by the Kenyan government; rather, it is a security assessment conducted by the British government for its citizens who are currently in, or traveling to, Kenya.
