A tribe from southern Iraq has stated that it recovered a hijacked oil tanker from a group of Somali pirates after nearly 40 tribal members mobilized and headed to the Gulf of Aden to rescue the vessel.<\/p>\n
Iraqi media reported that members of the Al-Shaghanba tribe, hailing from the Basra region, participated in an operation to retrieve the oil tanker, which had been seized by pirates demanding a ransom.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Ali Al-Shaghanbi, a member of the tribe, stated that the vessel belonged to an Iraqi businessman from the Al-Shaghanba clan and was captured by pirates while transiting the Gulf of Aden. According to him, the crew was held captive while the hijackers demanded a ransom.<\/p>\n
The Sheikh explained that approximately 40 tribal members\u2014mobilized from the Abu Al-Khasib district and the village of Jikour in southern Basra\u2014set out to recover the ship, utilizing contacts outside of Iraq. Other Iraqi reports stated that upon locating the vessel, tribe members engaged in a battle with the pirate group, subsequently retaking the ship and freeing the crew on board. Some reports indicated that the confrontation lasted for several hours.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Al-Shaghanbi stated that seven members of the pirate group were captured, while others managed to escape.<\/p>\n
Some media outlets also broadcast footage purported to show the maritime clash; however, details regarding the execution of the operation, the name of the vessel, and the exact time and location of the confrontation have not yet been independently verified.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Al-Shaghanba tribe announced that the operation to recover the vessel took place following communication and coordination with parties outside Iraq.
