The Somali government has said it is ready to take full responsibility for the security of the country if the African Union forces leave Somalia, dismissing concerns that the withdrawal of those forces could create an opportunity for Al-Shabaab to recapture the former territories.<\/p>\n
The Director General of the National Center for Combating Terrorism and Countering Violent Extremism in Somalia (TUBSAN), Ali Gurbe, said that Somalia has a well-trained army and bilateral security agreements with other countries, which can help the government in securing the country’s security.<\/p>\n
Ali Gurbe, who gave a special interview to The Eastleigh Voice in Nairobi, said that Somalia has been at war with Al-Shabaab for almost twenty years, and that experience has taught the country how to respond to security challenges and rebuild government institutions.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the possible withdrawal of the African Union troops, he said that this does not mean that Somalia faces security threats alone.<\/p>\n
“If African troops leave, we have bilateral agreements with other countries. We have friends and brothers who want to support the Somali people and government,” said Ali Gurbe.<\/p>\n
He added that Somalia has experienced repeated security problems, but has been able to recover each time.<\/p>\n
The official also expressed his confidence in the Somali army, saying that the country has a well-trained army that is capable of taking on more responsibility for security.<\/p>\n
Although Somali and international forces have driven Al-Shabaab out of major cities and towns, the group is still capable of carrying out attacks and operations against the government.<\/p>\n
Al-Shabaab has long taken advantage of loopholes in governance, political conflicts and social concerns to continue its operations.<\/p>\n
However, Ali Gurbe said that the existing security challenges cannot be a reason to fear the future of the country, noting that the Somali people have been dealing with attacks, droughts and the effects of climate change for a long time.<\/p>\n
Somalia is now gradually taking over security duties that were previously carried out by the African Union forces and international friends, while still relying on security cooperation with international countries and organizations.<\/p>\n
The TUBSAN official said that although security challenges still exist, Somalia is increasing its ability to manage internal security.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
