The Supreme Court of Somalia has declared that the results of the recent elections for the House of Representatives and Local Councils in Galmudug state, which took place on 30 July 2026, were not in accordance with the country\u2019s Constitution and Electoral Law.<\/p>\n

The decision, announced by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Bashi Yusuf Ahmed, stated that the manner in which the elections were administered and conducted deviated from the constitutional principles of free, fair and impartial elections.<\/p>\n

The court stated that the irregularities that occurred during the elections were not negligible, but seriously undermined the transparency, freedom and fairness of the elections, and affected the outcome.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court therefore annulled the results of the 30 July elections and ordered the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission to hold new elections for the House of Representatives and Local Councils in Galmudug.<\/p>\n

The Court directed that new elections be held as soon as possible, in full compliance with the Federal Constitution of Somalia, the Electoral Law, the Law on the Establishment of Committees and the Law on Political Parties and Organizations.<\/p>\n

In order to avoid an administrative vacuum that could affect public services and stability in Galmudug, the Court ruled that the existing institutions should remain in office until new institutions are elected through elections in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n

The Court stated that this was done in consideration of the public interest, the continuity of the administration and the need to prevent a situation of lack of governance.<\/p>\n

Regarding the costs of the case, the Court ruled that each party should bear its own costs of the case, taking into account the public interest and the circumstances of the election case.<\/p>\n

This decision came after the Tawfiq Party and other parties that participated in the election stated that the results were not as expected and described them as not in accordance with the laws.<\/p>\n
