The EU Special Representative for Somalia has welcomed the decision of the main opposition coalition to accept an invitation to attend a consultative conference extended by the Federal Government of Somalia, describing it as a positive step towards stability in the country.<\/p>\n

The Somali Future Council, which brings together regional leaders and former officials, has confirmed that it will participate in the consultative conference to be held in Mogadishu on 1 February 2026.<\/p>\n

The conference was invited directly by the Somali government.<\/p>\n

The EU Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that members of the Somali Future Council had accepted the invitation after a meeting, describing it as a \u201cpositive and constructive step\u201d.<\/p>\n

She added that what is needed now is a conducive environment conducive to fruitful dialogue between the political parties.<\/p>\n

The Somali Future Council has previously had strong disagreements with the federal government, particularly over plans to move the country to a “one person, one vote” electoral system.<\/p>\n

Although they accepted participation in the conference, the council set a condition that all amendments to the 2012 Interim Constitution be suspended, so that the talks can be fruitful and based on trust.<\/p>\n
