<\/p>\nOne of Somalia\u2019s largest telecommunications companies, Hormuud Telecom, has accused Kenyan forces of destroying one of its key mobile phone network facilities, located in the Lower Juba region.<\/p>\n
The company said the destruction caused widespread disruption to essential telecommunications and financial services that thousands of Somali citizens rely on.<\/p>\n
According to the company, the facility in the village of Dhuuyac-Garoon was destroyed on January 14, 2026, the same location that was previously targeted in a similar incident on January 21, 2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe regret to inform our customers and the wider Somali community that Kenyan government forces have once again deliberately destroyed the company\u2019s telecommunications equipment,\u201d the company said in a press release.<\/p>\n
The company added that the incident caused significant service and financial losses, directly affecting between 20,000 and 30,000 people living in the village of Dhuuyac-Garoon and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople living in Dhuuyac-Garoon and its surrounding areas have completely lost the telecommunications and financial services they used to receive from the company,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that the facility was destroyed by landmines, and that Kenyan troops were accused of illegally crossing the border, and were not part of a force legally operating inside Somalia.<\/p>\n
The company, which was established more than two decades ago, is Somalia’s largest telecommunications operator, as well as the country’s largest private employer.<\/p>\n
