The African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) has strongly condemned the unilateral decision by Israel to recognize \u201cSomaliland\u201d as an independent state. The Council described the move as a threat to the sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability of the Federal Republic of Somalia.<\/p>\n

The Council called for the immediate reversal of the decision, and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the unity and stability of Somalia, in accordance with the African Union Charter and relevant provisions of the Charter of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The statement also welcomed the decision of 26 December 2025 by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, rejecting the recognition of Somaliland, as this is contrary to the founding principles of the African Union and the United Nations, and undermines peace and stability in the region.<\/p>\n

The Council affirmed that no one has the right to alter the territorial boundaries of an AU member state, and that any such move is illegitimate. He also reminded that any attempt to change borders by force or illegal means threatens the peace and security of the continent, especially in the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n

The Council called on AU member states and international partners to support Somalia\u2019s unity, regional stability, and international law, and to oppose any unlawful acts. It also encouraged support for United Nations efforts to preserve the territorial integrity of Somalia.<\/p>\n

The statement also commended the Federal Government of Somalia for its efforts in state-building, and urged the continuation of intra-Somali dialogue as the only way to resolve the differences between the Federal Government and the member states.<\/p>\n

The Council requested that the AU Commission, in collaboration with IGAD and the East African Community (EAC), continue to facilitate joint peace talks.<\/p>\n
