The members of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia today approved the members of the Somali Human Rights Commission by a majority vote, after a meeting held at the Upper House headquarters in Mogadishu.<\/p>\n

First, the Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, Ms. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhsuumi, briefed the Senators of the Upper House on the members of the commission and their expertise, and requested them to approve them.<\/p>\n

After that, the Senators of the Upper House, who voted for the members of the Independent Human Rights Commission, approved them with 28 Senators, one Senator abstained, and no one opposed. Thus, the members of the commission approved them.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Family and Human Rights Development of Somalia, Ms. Khadija Makhzumi, said after the approval that she welcomes the decision of the Upper House of the Somali Parliament.<\/p>\n

“I thank the members of the Upper House of the Somali Parliament for approving the members of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, which were previously approved by the Council of Ministers and the House of the People,” said Ms. Khadija.<\/p>\n

The Minister said that this step by the Upper House of the Somali Parliament to approve the Independent National Human Rights Commission is the completion of a long-standing effort to advance human rights in Somalia, a process that has been ongoing for many years.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Speaker of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, said that the country needs unity to face the difficult situation in the country, and that the Human Rights Commission that was sworn in today should work well for the nation.<\/p>\n
