<\/p>\nOfficials from Somaliland and Puntland held their first face-to-face meeting in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, on 4\u20135 October 2025, where they agreed to work together on security, peace, and the economy.<\/p>\n
The meeting, which was attended by ministers and senior officials from both sides, focused on the overall security, political, and economic situation in the Horn of Africa region, especially the relationship between Somaliland and Puntland.<\/p>\n
A press release issued after the meeting stated that the meeting encouraged cooperation between the security agencies of both sides, and created a new atmosphere for building trust and confidence.<\/p>\n
Key points agreed upon:<\/p>\n
1. Security Cooperation
\nThe two sides agreed to jointly confront terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab and ISIS, and cooperate in ensuring border security. It was also agreed to strengthen maritime cooperation and the fight against organized crime that affects the economy and security of the region.<\/p>\n
2. Community Peacemaking
\nThe meeting highlighted the importance of urgently ending the conflict in Erigavo and surrounding areas, and encouraging the safe return of displaced persons to their homes. The role of the President of Somaliland in brokering peace, and the participation of Puntland in these peace efforts, were commended.<\/p>\n
3. Strengthening Trade and Community Relations
\nThe two sides agreed to strengthen people-to-people and trade relations, and to establish economic infrastructure that connects the two regions to enhance development opportunities in the region.<\/p>\n
4. Airspace Policy
\nThe meeting condemned Somalia\u2019s policy on the use of airspace for civil aviation, calling for airspace issues to be managed in accordance with international laws and agreements.<\/p>\n
The press release concluding the meeting stated that Somaliland and Puntland are committed to: Maintaining cooperation and dialogue in the interests of both parties. Promoting peace, development and cooperation in the region. Welcoming the role of the International Community in supporting peace and combating terrorism.<\/p>\n
