During an open debate on maritime security held by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Government of Somalia stressed the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the foundation for the peaceful and cooperative use of the world\u2019s oceans.<\/p>\n

The Somali delegation said that compliance with international maritime laws is essential for building trust among States and enabling unified and effective action to address maritime challenges, such as piracy, illegal fishing, illegal trafficking and environmental threats.<\/p>\n

\u201cRespect for these laws, while safeguarding the sovereignty of States, is an important step to build trust and ensure the success of joint efforts,\u201d said the Somali statement.<\/p>\n

The debate was also attended by Security Council member states, UN officials and maritime experts, with Somalia expressing its commitment to regional and international cooperation to ensure maritime safety and security.<\/p>\n

Somalia, which has the longest coastline in Africa, has faced major maritime challenges in recent years, particularly piracy and illegal fishing that have affected the daily lives of coastal communities and the country’s economy.<\/p>\n

The Somali government has stated that international cooperation and compliance with UNCLOS can play a significant role in protecting marine resources, developing the blue economy, and promoting peace in the Horn of Africa region.<\/p>\n
