The Kuwaiti government yesterday called for the coordination of regional and international efforts to support the Somali government\u2019s plans for country reconstruction, national reconciliation, and state institution building.<\/p>\n

The call came during a speech by the Kuwaiti Consul General in Jeddah and Kuwait\u2019s Permanent Representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Yusuf Al-Tunayan, during the ministerial-level meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Somalia, which opened in Doha, Qatar.<\/p>\n

Al-Tunayan said that supporting Somalia at this critical juncture is a real test of the ability of OIC member states to translate the principles on which the organization was founded into tangible action. He underlined Kuwait\u2019s consistent support for Somalia\u2019s territorial integrity, political independence, and statehood.<\/p>\n

He also expressed Kuwait\u2019s appreciation for the Somali government\u2019s efforts to build state institutions, strengthen security, and establish the rule of law, despite many challenges, especially in the economic and environmental sectors.<\/p>\n

Al-Tunayan also congratulated Somalia on winning a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for a two-year term (2025\u20132026).<\/p>\n

He added that Kuwait warmly welcomes the progress made by Somalia and the World Bank\u2019s decisions to waive its external debts, which he described as an important step that paves the way for economic stability, economic growth, expansion of basic services, and new development opportunities.<\/p>\n

Finally, Al-Tunayan noted that Kuwait has continued to provide humanitarian and development assistance in recent years through official and non-governmental organizations, especially in the areas of education, health, water, food security, and the development of youth and local communities, believing that sustainable development is the basis for lasting peace.<\/p>\n
