A delegation of Turkish special forces has arrived in Mogadishu to strengthen security cooperation with Somali forces, highlighting the deep defense ties between the Turkish and Somali governments, state media reported.<\/p>\n

The visit focused on improving training, sharing operational expertise, and enhancing the capabilities of the Somali Armed Forces, amid the growing regional security challenges posed by the Al-Shabaab militant group.<\/p>\n

The delegation is discussing with the Somali Armed Forces Command the advancement of counter-terrorism efforts in Somalia through specialized training programs and comprehensive support.<\/p>\n

Turkey, a key security partner of Somalia, has been instrumental in providing military assistance, including training at a Turkish base in the capital, Mogadishu.<\/p>\n

The base supports the training of Somali forces and the deployment of Turkish drones, such as the TB2 Bayraktar and the Akinci model, which are crucial in the fight against Al-Shabaab.<\/p>\n

Turkey’s growing presence in Somalia goes beyond military support. Since President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit in 2011, Ankara has further strengthened its business footprint, including management of the Mogadishu port and airport, and energy exploration deals.<\/p>\n

Nearly 500 Turkish soldiers, including 300 commandos recently brought from Turkey, have been tasked with protecting Turkish facilities and assisting with training, and the Ankara government has underlined its commitment to restoring stability in Somalia.<\/p>\n
