The Federal Government of Somalia has provided further details about a heavy airstrike that took place in an area 40 KM northwest of the city of Kismayo, the capital of Lower Juba region.<\/p>\n

A press release from the Ministry of Information of the Federal Government of Somalia stated that the airstrike targeted members of the Al-Shabaab group who were gathering there.<\/p>\n

“This airstrike is part of joint efforts to eliminate the ability of the Al-Shabaab Khawarij militia to plan and carry out terrorist attacks that threaten the Somali people, the armed forces and international partners,” said a press release from the Ministry of Information of Somalia.<\/p>\n

The press release from the Somali government did not mention the official casualties resulting from the heavy airstrikes carried out in the past few hours in the area near Kismayo, and there is no official statement from the US AFRICOM regarding the casualties of the airstrike.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Federal Government thanks AFRICOM, and we will continue our targeted airstrikes on Al-Shabaab locations,\u201d the Somali Ministry of Information said in a statement.<\/p>\n

This airstrike comes as similar strikes have been carried out in areas in the Juba region where Al-Shabaab is present by Somali government forces and the US-led AFRICOM, which provides airstrikes to Somalia.<\/p>\n
