At least 2 people were killed and 40 others injured in a protest in Burao, Somaliland, yesterday.<\/p>\n

The protest, which was held by people angry over reports that Somaliland soldiers captured in the Lascaanod war would be released, caused significant loss of life and property.<\/p>\n

“2 people were killed, 40 were injured, 15 vehicles were destroyed, some of them were burned. We were enduring the stones that were thrown at us, we were running away to prevent any damage. More than 150 people were arrested. Let’s maintain our peace,” the Togdheer Regional Police Commander told the media.<\/p>\n

“As a party, we deeply regret and condemn the government’s response, which was based on the use of excessive force, which is not in accordance with the Somaliland Constitution and its laws. These measures are not a solution to the public protests,” said a statement from the Kaah party.<\/p>\n

Burco city intellectuals and regional officials who spoke to the media agreed that the government should take action to resolve the protests, release all detainees, work towards peace, and for senior Somaliland officials to come to the city to appease the public.<\/p>\n

Lawyer Guleed Dafac, who comments on political and human rights issues, said that today’s uprising was the result of the government not fully providing the public with information on prisoners previously transferred to Puntland, which has led people to doubt that other prisoners still in prison will be released, while there are still many soldiers imprisoned in Somaliland in Lascaanod.<\/p>\n

Although the government denied reports circulating on social media, it said it wanted to release all prisoners without releasing prisoners held in Somaliland.<\/p>\n

Police used live ammunition on protesters, who threw stones at security forces.<\/p>\n

Somaliland’s opposition Kaah party and human rights activists condemned the police’s use of force.<\/p>\n
