The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Badr Abdelatty, on Friday led a delegation to the city of Asmara where he met with the President of Eritrea, Isaias Afeworki. and were welcomed at the guest house in Denden, with an emphasis on discussing security and stability issues in the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n

Yemane Gebremeskel, the Minister of Information of Eritrea, revealed that the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt is part of the bilateral consultation between the two governments, and in their meeting they talked about the strengthening of cooperation in many areas, including security issues in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, and these governments insist that a government that is not a neighbor to the Red Sea will not be able to get access to water.<\/p>\n

The Eritrean News Agency, a state-owned media outlet, quoted Egypt’s foreign minister as saying that “periodical consultations are aimed at developing common positions on key issues of regional security and stability”.<\/p>\n

The visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt to Asmara came a few days after Abiy Ahmed visited Somalia. In October 2024, Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia signed a tripartite agreement focused on regional security in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n

Egypt and Somalia signed a defense agreement in August 2024. Egypt was ready to send nearly 10,000 soldiers to Somalia to be part of the African Union mission.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia has seen the deployment of Egyptian troops as a threat to national security. Although relations between Ethiopia and Somalia seem to have improved, it is not clear whether Egypt is still sending troops to Somalia or not.<\/p>\n
