The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro, said that his government will improve its relations with the governments of Ethiopia and Djibouti.<\/p>\n

President Irro said that Ethiopia is a long-standing friend who is indispensable for economic cooperation, security and relations between Somaliland and African countries.<\/p>\n

“I am mentioning Ethiopia which is a long-standing friend and neighbor that we do not need for economic development, security strengthening, social stability and our relations with Africa,” said Cirro. “It is our duty to improve that relationship and bring it to the highest point for the benefit of our two nations.”<\/p>\n

Irro also said that he will work to improve relations between the government of Djibouti, which has been in conflict with Somaliland for the last year, and the United States government.<\/p>\n

“We will also strengthen our relationship with the government of Djibouti and the United States, which is among the countries that are particularly interested in Somaliland,” added President Irro.<\/p>\n

Somaliland and Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding a year ago in which Ethiopia will receive a military base in the Gulf of Adam, and Somaliland will receive recognition from Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

The agreement, which the Djibouti government itself saw as an economic threat, has not yet been implemented, and the agreement reached by Ankara between the governments of Somalia and Ethiopia is believed to have destroyed the understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland.<\/p>\n
