The International Maritime Organization has urged foreign ship operators to be vigilant when sailing between the coasts of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, saying that piracy remains a threat.<\/p>\n

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said in its latest annual report that eight piracy attacks were reported off the coast of Somalia in 2024.<\/p>\n

According to the IMB, the hijacking of two fishing vessels and a cargo ship in the first half of 2024 was one of eight reported piracy incidents last year.<\/p>\n

IMB director Michael Howlett said there was no room for complacency as ongoing threats to worker safety highlighted the importance of continued vigilance.<\/p>\n

“Owners and operators of vessels are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to all best management practices recommendations while transiting the Gulf of Guinea and East African waters,” said Howlett.<\/p>\n

The IMB said Somali pirates can target vessels up to 1,000 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, using fast fishing boats.<\/p>\n

She said the latest incidents show the continued strength of Somali pirates, although attacks have decreased since 2017.<\/p>\n

This news coincided with the release of a Chinese fishing vessel that was hijacked off the coast of the Puntland administration a few days ago.<\/p>\n
