The Federal Government of Somalia has officially requested the United Nations not to renew the mandate of the United Nations Office in Somalia (UNSOM).<\/p>\n

The government of Somalia wants to move from the United Nations Office of Assistance to Somalia (UNSOM) to a regular United Nations Office.<\/p>\n

The government has said that this change is part of a wider strategy that Somalia wants to harmonize with the structure of international relations and that of other independent countries.<\/p>\n

Somalia, which is a candidate for the non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council in 2025-26, believes that there is no need for a political office of the United Nations outside of the current mandate.<\/p>\n

The race for that seat shows Somalia’s commitment to participating in peace and security talks in the world, according to the official of the United Nations Mission in Somalia.<\/p>\n

This official said that Somalia did not ask to close the United Nations office, but instead it is looking for a normal operation of the United Nations, similar to the one in other countries.<\/p>\n
