Sir Gavin Williamson, the former defense secretary of the United Kingdom, said that Donald Trump recently held talks with his team on the recognition of Somaliland, which will be an important political step, according to The Independent newspaper.
Sir Gavin is confident that Trump will take this up when he takes office in January.
He also said that Somaliland has geostrategic importance, especially in relation to the Red Sea.
The former UK defense secretary led a massive campaign to recognize Somaliland, a part of the British-colonised Somaliland, and a campaign to separate it from the rest of Somalia for more than 30 years.
This comes at a time when Somaliland recently won a free and fair election, which was won by Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, the leader of the opposition, with 53% of the votes.
The identity of Somaliland is still controversial, and this issue may affect regional politics and Somalia’s international relations.
