The US Embassy in Somalia has sent congratulations and compliments to the President-elect of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro and the people of Somaliland after the presidential election that took place there on November 17.

“The US government congratulates the people of Somaliland and the elected president, Abdirahman Irro. Somaliland’s elections are an example for the region,” the statement said.
The congratulatory message comes after the Somaliland election committee announced the preliminary results this morning, which they said won the president of Somaliland with a majority for the National Party candidate Abdirahman Irro.
He received 63.92% of the votes cast, defeating the ruling Kulmiye Party President Muse Bihi Abdi who received 34.81%.
The UCID party, which received only 0.74%, lost its status as a party, and was replaced by the Kaah organization according to Somaliland’s election laws.
